GPAT EXAM

GPAT (Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test) is the national, computer-based entrance test for M.Pharm admission and AICTE scholarships. It is conceptual and application-heavy — the paper rewards understanding of mechanisms, structures and calculations rather than plain recall.

How to prepare for GPAT EXAM

  1. 1. Prioritise the high-weight subjects

    Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry (organic + medicinal) and Pharmaceutical Analysis together decide the score. Pharmacognosy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacy Practice, Jurisprudence and Human Anatomy fill the rest.

  2. 2. Learn structures, not just names

    Medicinal chemistry questions ask about SAR, functional groups, metabolism and synthesis. Draw the core nucleus of every major drug class instead of memorising drug lists.

  3. 3. Master the calculation topics

    Physical pharmacy, pharmacokinetics, spectroscopy and analysis contribute numerical questions — HLB, half-life, clearance, bioavailability, Beer–Lambert, normality and isotonicity. Practise until each takes under a minute.

  4. 4. Study from standard books

    Use the standard B.Pharm references for concepts and a GPAT-oriented question bank for drill. Solve the previous ten years of GPAT and NIPER papers — themes repeat even when wording changes.

  5. 5. Train on a screen

    GPAT is a 3-hour CBT with an on-screen calculator and a question palette. Take full-length online mocks so navigation, marking for review and time-splitting become automatic.

Scores are normalised and reported as a percentile along with the GPAT scorecard, which is valid for three years for M.Pharm admission and AICTE stipend eligibility.

Exam tips

  • With +4 / −1, an educated guess between two options is statistically worth taking; a blind guess between four is not.
  • Make three passes: sure answers first, then the workable ones, then the marked-for-review questions.
  • Keep 25–30 minutes aside for chemistry structures — they consume more time than any other section.
  • Revise named reactions, drug metabolism pathways and receptor–second messenger tables weekly.
  • Use the on-screen calculator during mocks so exam-day arithmetic never breaks your rhythm.
  • Track your percentile trend across mocks rather than raw marks; difficulty varies between papers.
